Task

(Tuesday) Discussed Skype Meeting for Friday 11am to discuss Hardware expectations and tasking with Professor

(Friday) Worked in a conference call with Aaron, Evan, Damir, Myself and Mr Jonas to talk about what exactly our client was looking for and what we had available and to discuss possible testing/experiment platforms. We can to the conclusion that Me and Evan will focus more on the hardware side and with networking; While Damir and Aaron will be working with the database and finding ways to remotely update software on the systems.

(Friday) Team Notes gathered from Skype meeting:Rough but covers basic ideas/settings discussed:

Caesar is a raided system: three drives: how much data is free on it? 9 powered system with 1 hard disk, dual core 2.8ghz running open susie. Use NFS mounting is possible. Java installed, perl, c++, Ant?, Emac(text editor), proposal on Feb21, rough draft this next week. Caesar is networked, the poweredges isn't, How to we get them to see the internet. Make caesar a switch for the other 9 mach or make caesar a repository for updates…maybe,,,

Network bridge 2 for bridging and 2 for updating. Damir-remote update evan, sky- bridging with linux Aaron-

What do we need/have and whats needed to make it work/run properly? Document current system configuration.

Info links for system config?

(Sat) Aaron and I emailed about helping me getting mt Log section on the Wiki to work

Results

(Sat)Got a plan down for a proposal.

Plan

(Sat)To write a proposal for the hardware and networking aspect of my team.

Concerns

(Sat)Will we get access to machines to experiment on?

Week Ending Feb 13th, 2012

Task

(Tues) I talked with Aaron about setting up a meeting again for Friday @ 11AM. I also spoke with both Aaron and Evan about part of my project proposal with I emailed out to everyone in our group and will be discussed through our meeting Friday.

(Tues) Changed Wiki Logs page to accommodate Template for standardization.

(Fri) Today our group had a Skype meeting to discuss the proposal for Tuesday. We reaffirmed the current draft proposal and will be adding to it. We also discussed compatibility issues if the machines are up-datable without interfering with any other software or process's that are running. We also discussed whether we should have it update one at a time or all at a time; we will also configure the machines to auto-update as to save the user form having to meddle too deep in the Linux environment and to reduce time spent on maintenance.

(Fri) Read others logs and progress.

Results

Proposal for the Networking/Hardware completed: waiting on Software and Management addition.

Plan

Skype Meeting Friday @ 11AM Combine Proposals this weekend. Start DHCP/DNS tests on Linux test machines to see if its possible to have Caesar act as a router next week after class.

Concerns

Project proposal for Networking and Hardware configuration. DONE! How will we combine our groups proposal with the rest of the classes?

Week Ending Feb 20th, 2012

Task

(Tues)Added the network and hardware proposal to the project proposal on the Wiki today. (Tues) Played around with Caesar today and explored the environment: Found that LDAP will work and found a site that will help me setup Caesar as a bridge-but experimentation will take place on different machines.

(Thur) Read Brian and Chris's Spr '11 logs. Really noticed a couple of things. Hoping LDAP will work.

(Sun) Read J. Shultz log.

(Mon) I emailed Evan M and asked what our plan will be for testing on the test machines. I feel once we get a plan down, we can go full tilt on Caesar and get a Bridge working.

Results

(Tues)Network/Hardware/Software/Management proposal for our team has been all uploaded on the wiki; further revision will be made in case of inconsistency. (Tues) Found a writeup on how we can bridge Caesar with two network cards: http://cn.opensuse.org/Virtualbox_Network_Bridging

(Tues) I can log into Root and Shp26 but i cannot SSH into my automatix machine even though Ive run ssh keygen -t rsa.

(Thur)Posting results from Tuesday: found that Caesar is running 2 active NIC's and can run a Active directory/Kerberos type of routing table. Now I have to check and experiment on our test machines.

(Sun)Read J. Shutlz's Unix command notes. They will prove helpful.

Plan

(Tues)In class me and Evan plan to experiment with the unix box with networking. (Tues) Setup a bridge on the experiment machines and document how i did it and my success. (Thur) It is my goal to get my hands on the test machines and use that meeting time to setup a type of bridge on OPENSUSE. (Mon) Get to work Tues with Linux and network our test machines.

Concerns

(Tues) Im concerned that I will not be able to ssh into automatix.

(Sun) I pikced up a Linux Admin Book and hope that it can help step me through the process of LDAP and Bridging. Possibly Kerberos too(just to gain foundational knowledge)

Week Ending Feb 27th, 2012

Task

(Tues) Reviewed over the new proposal document in class and sent revisions back with Evan. I also emailed urgent direction to Chris Reekie to help us get our opensuse test machines up.

(Tues) Ran the code in OpenSuse today. From Evan who found the results:

Make sure your in the ' caesar:~/speechtools/SphinxTrain-1.0/train1 #' directory first!

  • Ran this command in class
/usr/local/bin/sphinx3_decode -hmm model_parameters/train1.cd_cont_1000 -lm LM/tmp2.arpa -dict etc/train1.dic -fdict etc/train1.filler -cepdir feat -ctl etc/train1_train.fileids -cepext ".mfc"

Successful run!

(Thurs) Reviews over My and Evans proposal. (Mon) Ran commands on linux at home to see if I could do some pretesting of networking commands. (Mon) Read my teams logs. Updated Mine and Evans report timeline.

Results

(Tues) I got a copy of Ubuntu Server(DNS) builder running on a home machine. Hoping to run some tests with networking.

(Tues) Me and Evan have a rough draft of our Network Bridging completed and an email has been dispatched to Chris Reekie. (Thurs) I have submitted a draft of Mine and Evans report proposal. We will polish it and add as we make/have developments.

Plan

(Tues) I got a copy of Ubuntu Server(DNS) builder running on a home machine. Hoping to run some tests with networking. (Thurs) Hoping to run some network scripts/commands on my Ubuntu system at home and start experimenting. (Mon) Results with testing Linux at home didnt work. My version of linux is so different from opensuse, that I cant run commands that would work in opensuse. Testing must continue at school.

Concerns

(Tues)We need to get the opensuse machines up by Feb 22nd by 1600! (Thurs) Im not sure how my Ubuntu test system at home will compare to results/procedures of Caesar.

Week Ending Mar 5th, 2012

Task

(Tues) Our goal was tot setup OPENSUSE on the test machine setup for us in room 112.

(Fri) I plan to try to install opensuse at home.

(Sun) Read my teams logs.

(Mon) Re-setup OPENSUSE at home; try networking opensuse at home.

Results

(Tues) Installing OS via thumb drive installation proved debunked after several failed attempts

(Tues) Getting a burnable CD from Mrs Vogel, we burned a copy and finally got the install screen up.

(Wed) Checked email on Wednesday and found Evan emailed me saying OPENSUSE didnt install on our test machine; asks if I can try it at home.

(Fri) Got OPENSUSE 11.3 32 bit working on my machine at home after 6 hours of tests.

(Sun) Found some sites that will help with setting up bridging:

(Mon) After 4 to 6 hours of attempts, I was not able to get OPENSUSE to act as a bridge/Router.

Plan

(Fri) Try to get OPENSUSE to install on my machine at home.

(Sun) Research networking and bridging linux.

(Mon) work on this problem with Evan Morse and figure this setup out on Tuesday.

Concerns

(Fri) Concerns include integrity of OPENSUSE file system and compatibility with system hardware.

(Sun) Because the linux GUI is a new environment to me, it will be a handicap trying to learn how top operate OPENSUSE

(Mon) My concern is that OPENSUSE 11.3 does not support or readily support machine bridging or routing.

Week Ending Mar 12th, 2012

Task

(Tues) Spent half of the day trying to install OPENSUSE with no luck. Spent the other half determining and trying to ensure properly working hardware as well as trying to format and index current 300Gb drive with no success: Evan observed capacitor on the MoBo appears to be blown-giving us IDE controller problems. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague

(Thurs) Skype chatted with Evan about further developments and also spoke with damir about how to go about "unkilling" a killed hard drive.

(Friday) Messed around with OPENSUSE at home a little

Results

(Tues) Dead hard drive. Unfortunately, no much progress has been made yet.

Plan

(Fri) Going to try seagates hard drive recovery form their site sometime next week.

Concerns

(Tues) Our adviser mentioned about mounting: auto mounting the 9 servers. We will look into it if time allows.

(Fri) That if the actual hard drive is genuinely broken, then we will have to secure another machine to use.

Week Ending Mar 19th, 2012

Task

(Mon)Rescue the 'damaged' seagate hard drive in Plato test machine.

(Tue)Read my teams logs.

Results

(Mon)Unfortunately, I didnt have any available time to work on the HDD.

Plan

(Tue)The plan is this week is to rescue broken seagate hdd and install opensuse on it.

Concerns

(Tue)That the drive we have to use is really not a good drive at all and cant be restored.

Week Ending Mar 26th, 2012

Task

(Tues) tried to rescue HDD and create a bridge.

(Wed) Tried to rescue the Seagate HDD.

(Thurs) Read my Teams logs.

(Sun) Read Team's Logs.

(Mon) Try an opensuse Install on my 40G HDD and the projects 300G HDD

Results

(Tues) Made a successful bridge with windows home network: proof of concept that the current setup works

(Wed) The Seagate HDD is not found by an OS installer screen and killed my Opensuse machine.

Plan

(Tues) to rescue HDD and create bridge.

(Tues) I can bring in my own machine for opensuse if need be.

(Wed) I will be passing off the Seagate HDD to Damir.

(Sun) Plan to rebuild my Opensuse copy tomorrow.

(Mon) 40G took opensuse just fine. 300G drive wont take data.

Concerns

(Tues) that the seagate HDD is truly broken.

(Wed) I believe the logic board on the HDD is bad.

Week Ending Apr 2nd, 2012

Task

(Tues) Implemented my own hard drive with opensuse for Plato and tried to network it to Aristotle.

(Wed) Talked with Evan on the progress of the network bridge..no luck so far.

Results

(Tues) Plato is running strong.

Plan

(Tues) Install wifi dongle on Plato and use the wifi network for our internet connection.

Concerns

(Tues) That Opensuse will not support the wifi card via usb were using.

Week Ending Apr 9th, 2012

Task

(Tues) Our goal this week is to: 1. Get Sphinx Installed on Methusalix and 2. start a mini train after that.

(Fri) Had Skype team meeting with Aaron J.

Plan

(Fri) Im in the process of copying the switchboard disk files over to my home server.

Results

(Fri) We both were only able to get about 6 to 8 steps into methusalix before we hit a brick wall: no switchboard was present.

(Tues) Me, Aaron J and Johnny M will be planning another skype meeting for this Friday at 1700.

(Sun) Update from friday...Files could not be transferred over to my machine to put onto Methusalix...Maxed out my HDD room.

(Sun) Me and Aaron J also ran into trouble with the mini train in the switchboard directory becasue the data wasnt there

(Sun) Read Logs

Concerns

(Tues) That coping files over will be a little difficult.

(Tues) Hoping we dont encounter any critical problems.

(Fri) The files are too vast to move them. BUT, Aaron J did make a switchboard folder so we do have a destination to put them once downloaded.
